You receive a phone call from your CEO asking you to urgently transfer funds, share sensitive information, or approve an unexpected payment. You recognize their voice, their tone, and even the way they speak. Everything sounds real.

But what if it isn't actually your CEO?

AI voice cloning is making it easier for cybercriminals to impersonate executives, coworkers, and other trusted individuals. With increasingly accessible AI tools, scammers can create convincing audio that makes fraudulent requests seem legitimate.

---

**What Is CEO Fraud?**

CEO fraud is a form of social engineering in which a cybercriminal impersonates a company executive or another person in authority to convince employees to transfer money, share confidential information, or bypass established security procedures.

Traditionally, these attacks relied on fraudulent messages or spoofed addresses designed to create urgency. Now, AI-generated audio can create an illusion of legitimacy by making these requests appear to come from individuals that you know and trust. These communications are becoming increasingly harder to decipher.

---

**How Does AI Voice Cloning Work?**

AI voice cloning uses artificial intelligence to analyze recordings of someone's voice and generate audio that imitates how that person speaks.

Anything available online, like public interviews, social media videos, presentations, or other recordings, can provide attackers with audio samples that can be used to imitate someone. This means a cybercriminal could recreate an executive's voice and use it in a phone call or voicemail to convince an employee to take action.

The problem isn't that cybercriminals are getting smarter. It's that they have smarter tools at their disposal.

---

**Why Are These Scams So Convincing?**

CEO fraud relies on more than a familiar voice. Cybercriminals use psychological tactics to pressure employees into acting before they question the situation.

**Authority:** A request that appears to come from a CEO or senior leader may seem more legitimate.

**Urgency:** Scammers may claim a payment must be completed immediately, or an important deadline is approaching.

**Secrecy:** Employees may be instructed not to discuss the request because the matter is supposedly confidential.

**Familiarity:** Recognizing someone's voice can make an unusual request feel trustworthy.

The tactics are familiar, but AI makes them easier to execute and more convincing.

---

**How Can You Protect Yourself?**

Protecting your business doesn't require employees to become experts at identifying AI-generated voices. It starts with consistent cybersecurity habits and clear verification procedures.

**Double-Check All Unexpected Requests:** If someone requests an unusual payment or sensitive information, verify the request through a separate and trusted communication channel. Even if the caller sounds exactly like an executive, call them back using a number you already know is legitimate.

**Establish Approval Procedures:** Financial transactions and changes to payment information should follow established approval processes, regardless of who makes the request. Requiring a second authorized employee to verify significant transactions can help prevent fraudulent transfers. You can also create a safe word for your team and share it in person, not online, that can be used to verify whether a request is legitimate.

**Train Your Employees and Communicate:** Cybersecurity awareness training should extend beyond suspicious emails. Employees need to recognize that phone calls, voicemails, and video meetings can also be used for impersonation. If you receive a suspicious call or believe you've responded to a fraudulent request, report it immediately. The sooner your IT team knows, the sooner they can investigate and help limit the impact.

**Don’t let a familiar voice replace your approval processes, because when it comes to CEO fraud, recognizing a voice isn't enough. You need to verify the person behind it.**
